Broken Allegiance is a fan film that made its debut on the internet in April 2002, created by Australian fans of the Star Wars franchise. It is a live-action drama released by Vidizen Films, which is set in the Star Wars universe, taking place a few weeks between the events in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. It tells the story of two Sith apprentices, Ruan and Calis, who have escape the Empire by fleeing Coruscant in a stolen transport. They must fight for their freedom when Darth Vader sends the vicious bounty hunter Korbain Thor to track them down.

The film started pre-production in January 2001, and was shot both in studio and on locations around Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Broken Allegiance cost approximately $6,000 AUD to make, mostly spent on raw materials for sets, props, costumes, catering and equipment rental to make the film. The film was made entirely with volunteer cast and crew.

In a departure from most fan films, Broken Allegiance features an original symphonic score by composer Rich Johnson, which was performed by the Johnson Film Orchestra.

Upon release, the film garnered major media coverage and was screened at numerous local and international film festivals to great response. Since its release, the film has been downloaded worldwide in excess of 1 million times. A sequel project was announced in 2003, but was cancelled in 2005 when the director decided to pursue an original feature film concept.

The film won the Audience Favorite Award in the 2003 I-CON Film Festival, and was a finalist in the 2002 Australian Effects and Animation Awards.

Opening crawl

BROKEN ALLEGIANCE
After the destruction of the Death
Star at Yavin the Emperor orders
Darth Vader to find the pilot
responsible, by any means
necessary. To assist in his goal,
Vader has trained two apprentics
in the powerful ways of the Sith.

Having spent more than a year
immersed in Dark Jedi lore, the
pair has become disillusioned with
their role in the Emperor's grand
scheme.

Fleeing Coruscant in a stolen
transport, they are attempting to
escape Vader and gain their
freedom from the tyranny of the
Empire…

Synopsis

Ruan and Calis fly their stolen Gamma-class ATR-6 assault transport out of Coruscant's atmosphere, dodging blaster bolts and destroying a small Imperial base with one proton torpedo. They attempt to shake pursuing TIE fighters by flying closely to docked Star Destroyers. Two fighters collide and another is destroyed by a torpedo. With only one fighter pursuing, they fly into a narrow shaft. The shaft proves too narrow for the fighter and it is destroyed. They immerge after narrowly escaping the blast only to find the Super Star Destroyer Executor on the other side. The massive ship contacts the transport ordering them to surrender.

Aboard the Executor, Admiral Okins is contacted by Darth Vader, who expresses his urgent need for the capture of the two apprentices.

The Dark Jedi continue to flee. A direct hit on their hull causes major damage to their engines. With one minute until they jump to lightspeed, they realize that with the massive damage to their Hyperdrive, the furthest they will get is the Bothawui system. The Executor then begins to pull the transport in using the tractor beam. Calis then fires two proton torpedoes at the Executor and destroy the tractor beam. With them free, they enter lightspeed. Just then Lord Vader arrives and upon learning that they have escaped, Force chokes Admiral Okins. Captain Hannard then suggests they fled to the Bothawui system and asks they set a course. Lord Vader refuses and instead contacts Korbain Thor, a bounty hunter and demands he capture Ruan and Calis.

Entering orbit of Bothawui, Calis sends out an emergency distress call. Ruan cuts off her transmission expressing concern that she is "letting every bounty hunter in the sector know we're here." They have a brief argument and Calis apologies saying she knows that Vader is out there hunting them down. Ruan believes Vader's anger over Skywalker will be enough to distract their former master but Calis disagrees. She walks up to Ruan expressing her happiness that she at least met him. They are about to kiss (revealing they are romantically involved) when the sensors read another ship entering orbit. The other ship moves to an attack position and contacts the transport stating "there is no escape." The bounty hunter then fires on the transport and Ruan and Calis flee in an escape pod just as Thor destroys their ship.

On the planet's surface, Ruan heals Calis' wound and they begin to search for a settlement. As they search they are narrowly missed by blaster bolts. Ruan pulls out his red lightsaber and deflects them easily. Calis then ignites her purple lightsaber stating to Thor "What makes you think you can take us out?". At that, Thor lifts off his helmet and turns his blaster into an orange lightsaber. They begin to duel. Thor Force pushes Calis away and then punches Ruan. He then knocks Ruan down a cliff and he and Calis begin an aggressive clash of lightsabers. Thor then shoots Calis and Ruan runs up from the cliff shouting "No!". He then uses Force lightning on Thor and knocks him to the ground. Thor then throws a bomb at Ruan and knocks him to the ground. They then begin a fist fight and Thor pins Ruan against a tree holding a knife to his neck. Calis then rushes up behind him and shoots him with his own blaster. Ruan and Calis hug and then look above to see the Executor entering orbit.

Darth Vader then sends a lieutenant down to the surface to retrieve the two Dark Jedi. The lieutenant and a group of stormtroopers land on the surface to find Thor holding Calis. The lieutenant orders Thor to take off his helmet. He does so revealing it is in fact Ruan. Ruan hands over Calis who then breaks free of her restraint and punches the lieutenant. She then retrieves her lightsaber and kills the stormtroopers while Ruan holds the lieutenant hostage.

The lieutenant then returns to the Executor alone. When Lord Vader sees this he lifts his hand ready to choke the officer but has mercy and turns away.

Ruan and Calis leave the system in Thor's ship. It is revealed that Calis is pregnant with Ruan's baby and the two fly off into lightspeed.

Calis and Ruan's names are most likely taken from "Callous" and "Ruin," respectively.
