- "Remember, the Force will be with you. Always."
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Luke Skywalker
Obi-Wan Kenobi (portrayed by Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor) is one of the primary protagonists of the Star Wars Saga, and one of only three characters to appear in all six live-action films. He first appeared in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. After the character's death in the film, he appeared as a ghost in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. A younger version of the character appeared in all three films of the prequel trilogy, and an animated version of the character appeared as a main character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Obi-Wan has been the subject of rumors suggesting he will appear as a ghost in Star Wars Episode VII, and possibly even a spinoff film.
Chronologically, Obi-Wan is introduced as the apprentice of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, as they both fight against the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo. After Qui-Gon's death at the hands of Darth Maul, Obi-Wan becomes a Jedi Knight and trains Anakin Skywalker. The two fight side by side during the Clone Wars, during which time Anakin falls to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader. With the Jedi Order destroyed and the Galactic Empire replacing the Republic, Obi-Wan takes Anakin's son, Luke Skywalker, to Tatooine for safety. Two decades later, Obi-Wan trains Luke in the ways of the Force, before being killed by Vader aboard the Death Star. Obi-Wan's spirit continues to commune with Luke, helping him become a Jedi Knight. After Vader's redemption and the return of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan and Anakin are reunited as ghosts.
Rumored involvement in upcoming films
Star Wars Episode VII
On August 16, 2013, Latino Review reported that sources close to the production of Star Wars Episode VII told them that the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as portrayed by Ewan McGregor, would appear in the film. Because Episode VII is set after the original trilogy, when Kenobi and the ghost was played by Sir Alec Guinness, this led to speculation that McGregor would either be made to look older, or that the ghost would appear as a younger man, much like the ghost of Anakin Skywalker in the revised version of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.[1] For his part, McGregor said he would be willing to reprise his role, though he said he has not received an offer. He also does not know how his appearance would be reconciled with that of Alec Guinness in the original trilogy.[2]
Spinoff film
In addition to the Episode VII rumor, Latino Review reported that McGregor is hoping for a standalone film featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, though whether he gets such a film is "up in the air."[1] A standalone Obi-Wan film would presumably be set between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, during the character's exile on Tatooine.
