The Walt Disney Company is a major American media company founded by Roy and Walt Disney in 1923. The company has created some of the most beloved films of all time and, throughout its history, has been a pioneer in animation. The company has produced hundreds of films; owns television stations such as ABC, ESPN, and the Disney Channel; operates theme parks throughout the world, most notably Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California; and has acquired such companies as Pixar Animation Studios and Marvel Entertainment.

On October 30, 2012, after lobbying by CEO Bob Iger, Disney acquired Lucasfilm from George Lucas for over $4 billion. In addition to the acquisition, Disney announced that it would be producing new Star Wars films beginning with Star Wars Episode VII, set to be released on December 18, 2015. Also in the works are Star Wars Episode VIII, Star Wars Episode IX, spinoff films, the TV show Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars attractions in Disney parks.
