As you know, Lucasfilm today announced that the new animated series, Star Wars Rebels, will be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Since they're between the two trilogies, that leaves a number of characters who could possibly return:
Assuming The Clone Wars aren't tied up in a bow before this new series, Ahsoka Tano could even factor into this series.
What existing, and alive, characters would you like to see in Rebels?
You cannot have Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda in the Rebels series? Doesn't "New Hope" set the guidelines that Obi-Wan and Yoda have been in hiding since the end of The Revenge of the Sith?
It can still work. There's nothing in the films that says that Obi-Wan and Yoda sat around on their planets for all those years and never went anywhere else. They could still go off and have adventures. There are constraints, like making sure the Empire doesn't know they're alive, but they can still be part of the action to a more limited extent.
And besides, since the Yoda exile scene was deleted from Revenge of the Sith, we don't know from screen canon when he got to Dagobah or how long he spent there.
I, personally, kind of expected there to be another Star Wars show following the end of The Clone Wars - it is entering into its final season right now, and with its departure, we'll need something else to keep the younger Star Wars fans entertained. I think this will be good, but I don't know how long it will last. I think it will be like The Clone Wars in that its setting, plot, characters, etc. with each new episode... For example, one episode will focus on Leia's life with Bail and Queen Brea, the next could focus on Han Solo's life, etc. I'd love to see the original Rebels be in it and some of the other supporting characters, but we have to keep in mind that there is only so much we're supposed to know in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and we wouldn't want to rob the original films of anything. It'll be exciting to see where they take the characters with this new series, though, I am very excited. :)
The Clone Wars actually ended. The fifth season was its last, and there won't be a sixth. However, Lucasfilm has said that they'll probably release the remaining material as bonus content.
Going off of what you said about keeping the younger Star Wars fans entertained, I'm encouraged by what Kathy Kennedy said about this show. She said that this show will appeal to what kids and their parents like about Star Wars. That, to me, is the difference between the original trilogy and the prequels. The original appealed to kids and adults, whereas the prequels generally only appealed to kids. If they can restore that balance, then they'll be headed in the right direction.
Really? I wasn't sure if they had stopped airing new episodes or not, I kind of got bored with the show and how repetitive it got to be. I think it was time for the show to end. I also agree with you on what you said about the original appealing to kids and adults and the prequels generally appealing to kids, although personally, I really liked the prequel films more - they weren't better, but I liked them more. But I do think that if they can restore that balance, they'll be headed in the right direction; Episode III wasn't that bad, though, that one is my favorite. I think it's mainly Episode I and II that caused some fans to dislike the prequel trilogy as a whole, even though Episode 'I is another one of my favorites. :) And while we're on the topic of the prequel trilogy, am I the only Star Wars fan that actually liked Jar Jar's character even though he was kind of clumsy and annoying at times? (Maybe I like him because we have a lot of similar qualities, lol)
Keeping Emperor Palpaitne a mysterious figure would be a smart idea. Vader does the dirty work, he's the Emperor's right hand man and enforcer - I would love to see some of him in battles with the 501st Legion.
Ahsoka, Asajj Ventress ,Captain Rex, Fives, Bo-Katan Kryze, Hondo Ohnaka, Lux Bonteri, Korkie, Amis, Lagos, Soniee, Riyo Chuchi, Darth Maul, Cad Bane, Embo... they should all be in the show, along with the "classics", meaning Obi-Wan, Yoda etc. And don't forget Starkiller...
What makes me sad is that my favorite Star Wars villain of all time cannot be present, because he is dead... Poor Grievous...
