Casting for Star Wars Episode VII is well underway, with open auditions being held for two lead roles currently being referred to as Thomas and Rachel. Now, a new report in The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Episode VII is looking to cast a "40-something military man a la Matt Damon in Elysium."
For thsoe who haven't seen Elysium, what might that mean? According to the official Elysium site, Matt Damon's character "hasn't always played by the rules," and spends a lot of his life in prison. He is an orphan from 22nd Century Los Angeles, and now has committed himself to staying on the right side of the law—until "something goes awry, and consequences out of Max's control once again test his resolve."
We don't yet know whether any of that will translate into Episode VII, since the trade report did not include any further details, but we can at least surmize that the Episode VII character would be a strong, resolute character who will do whatever it takes in his job. The role was previously described, in past casting sheets, as a "forty something male, fit, military type."
