George Osborne, the United Kingdom's Chancellor of the Exchequer, has announced via an email from the Treasury, has announced that the first Star Wars standalone film will begin filming at Pinewood Studios sometime in 2015, after Star Wars Episode VII completes its filming at the studio. The standalone film is being written by Gary Whitta and will be directed by Gareth Edwards, for a release on December 16, 2016.
Osborne said that the continued presence of Star Wars in the UK will "mean more jobs and more investments. I have been determined that we back our brilliant creative industries which is why we have invested in skills and training as well as providing tax relief for films, high-end TV, animation, video games and regional theater."
