Gareth Edwards

Lucasfilm has officially announced that Gareth Edwards, the director behind the recent monster hit Godzilla (pun totally intended), will be directing one of the three Star Wars spinoff films. The film will be written by Gary Whitta, and will be released on December 16, 2016.

In the announcement, Edwards was quoted as saying:

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."

For his part, Whitta—who wrote The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington—said:

"From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

It is unclear as to which film they are working on; Disney has not yet announced what the spinoff film stories will center on, though it has long-been assumed that they would focus on characters such as Han Solo and Boba Fett. Earlier this month, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Disney and Lucasfilm would be producing at least three spinoff films before the end of the decade. Previous reports indicated that there were two spinoffs in development.
