Lucasfilm today announced that they have begun production on Star Wars Rebels, the new animated series that was first alluded to a few months ago. The series is scheduled to premiere as a one-hour special on the Disney Channel in fall 2014, followed by a series airing on Disney XD.
The series will be set between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in the early days of the Rebel Alliance, an era that has never been seen on television or film. According to Lucasfilm, the series "takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledging rebellion against the Empire is taking shape." However, Lucasfilm also says that "Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point."
Dave Filoni, supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, has joined the creative team as an executive producer. Also joining as executive producers are Greg Weisman, who has worked on shows such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man, and Gargoyles; and Simon Kinberg, who will write the premiere episode and has also been working on spinoff films.
"The oppportunity to work in the era I grew up with, even though it precedes that era, is still tremendously exciting because this visual language is now open to us," Filoni said while pointing at an image of a TIE fighter. "Very directly, what Ralph McQuarrie was doing is now open to us in a way that we could never exploit on Clone Wars."
Gary Marsh, the president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, said in the press release that "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers." Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy further said that she "couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe" and that "Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."
We don't know much else at this point, but those attending Celebration Europe will get an exclusive first-look at Rebels. For now, check out this video released by Lucasfilm:
