Lucasfilm has officially announced that Lupita Nyong'o, long-rumored for a role in the film, and Gwendoline Christie have joined the cast of Star Wars Episode VII. Nyong'o gained fame for last year's 12 Years a Slave, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Christie has gained acclaim for her role as Brienne of Tarth in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, and she will be appearing in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, said of the casting: "I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII. It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

It's not yet clear what roles that either of the actresses will be playing. What is clear, however, is that these decisions add to the diversification of the Episode VII cast, which was a subject of much debate after the initial casting announcement contained only one new female cast member.
